Description: NSN, .50 RF (.56-50 Spencer), 20" barrel with a very good plus, bright bore that has some light freckling along its length. This is the rarely seen large frame type carbine made for U.S. purchase in late 1864 by Savage Revolving Arms Co. (operating as a sub-contractor for Remington). The metal has an overall dark plum-colored patina tinged with brown and also exhibits some mild silvering along a few of the projecting edges, most noticeably at the muzzle. There are some scattered areas of very mild freckling along the surface of the metal but the edges are still sharp and the original tang markings are still crisp and clear on the wrist. The original walnut forend and stock have been lightly sanded and have an additional dark oil finish over numerous small handling marks and minor blemishes. The original U.S. cartouche is still visible on the left side of the wrist and there are deeply struck Siamese markings along the underside of both pieces of wood. The carbine is a known sub-variant and is outfitted with both the sling bar and swivels. These carbines were sold back to Remington at the end of the Civil War whereupon they were shipped to France during the Franco-Prussian War of 1870. This example evidently made its way further east in subsequent years until finally making back to New England.
