Description:
S# NSN, percussion .40 caliber rifled barrel for patched ball and .45 caliber straight rifled buck or ball barrel, 36 inch barrels, very good bores. This swivel barrel rifle features an "H.E. Leman/Lancaster Pa" marked lightly engraved back action lock, double set triggers with German style pin front trigger and brass triggerguard with spur grip. The barrel lock is released by a thin trigger in front of the triggerguard. Both barrels are marked "F.W. Schrett" in script. They are brazed together with a flat iron strip on one side and ramrod channel opposite. Barrels show light punch twist engraving on top flat around sights. The very thin mid 9th century style low comb curly maple stock has a shadowline cheekpiece with silver star inlay. A small fleur-de-lis shaped inlay is missing from top of wrist. The engraved brass patchbox has three piercings and separate sideplates beside lid. The lid is held shut by a simple spring catch. The spiral striped ramrod is held by four brass ferrules. Ferrule closest to receiver is resoldered in place. Rifle shows marks and wear typical from many years service, brass furniture shows an aged patina and iron parts are brown. The swivel works however it is slightly loose. Hammer screw may be a replacement. Wood shows a chip at toe partially repaired with filler. This is a very nice American swivel barrel rifle with lots of character, a rather uncommon design and attractive patchbox. Antique
