Description:
NSN, .70 caliber, 42 3/4? barrel with a fair-good bore that has light-moderate pitting along its length. This is a very nice example that has an overall dark brown patina with scattered mild freckling throughout and mild pinprick pitting at the muzzle and on the breech and bolster. The hammer and ?852? marked lockplate have some further gray metal visible, but are lightly pitted at the hammer nose and around the bolster relief cut. The furniture and ridged trigger guard have a matching dark brown patina and the European walnut stock has a fine old varnish finish with scattered minor handling marks and blemishes throughout as well as some newer added finish on the left side of the butt where the raised cheek-piece was removed and smoothed over. The mechanism is still tight and fully functional, and a non-original button-tipped ramrod is included. The musket is also accompanied by a rare, original socket bayonet that measures 21 3/4? overall with an 18 3/4? straight, angular blade having four hollow-ground flutes on both sides. The metal has an overall speckled gray patina with freckling along the entire length that gradually turns to dark brown pitting at the tip. The bayonet uses the Laukart spring catch and still fits and locks securely on the muzzle. This is a great looking example of an early war European import that has a rare original bayonet. Antique
