Description:
SOLD ** Roger Rule’s Personal Model 70, .375 H&H Mag, “Lion Rifle” Mint

Winchester Pre-64 Model 70 Custom-made for Roger Rule by Master Gunmaker, Roger Ferrell, ACGG, .375 H&H, 22” barrel, built on Super Grade magnum action.

The quintessential African bush Model 70 designed for fast action in the bush, with a 22” Douglas Premium barrel with barrel-mounted front sling eye. Mounted with both scope and open sights: a Masterpiece island-rear sight furnished by NECG and a Holland & Holland-type ramped flip-over moon front sight. The scope was also selected for fast action in the bush, with the time-proven Leupold Var. X-III1.1-5x 20 in Talley Quick Detachable rings. The metal is masterfully restored to original Pre-64 Model 70 Super Grade finish and still wears the Super Grade bottom metal and floor plate.

The stock is American Black Walnut in Special Select Fancy grade which displays highly figured feather-crotch grain on both sides, with lots of color, figure and highlights.  This is the author’s favorite color for a gunstock, which is a burgundy, reminiscent of the color of a Stradivarius violin.

Design is classic straight comb with cheekpiece with genuine ebony accoutrements: ebony forend tip, ebony grip cap, and two ebony-plugged stock cross-bolts.  The stock is also inletted with a two-screw tie-down sling eye and finished off with a leather recoil pad.

The fastidious 26 lpi hand-checkering is a classic Fleur-de-lis pattern made famous by Westley Richards and is full wrap-around at the forend.

Inletting is tight and superb, metal to wood fit looks like they were “molded” together.

History of this Rifle: If you know my book, The Rifleman’s Rifle, you know I am too much of a purist to hack up a collectable Winchester Pre-64 Model 70.  A few years ago, I purchased what I thought was a 300H&H Super Grade and later discovered it had been “weatherbyized” -- rechambered to .300 Weatherby.

Since I had never wanted to cut down a perfectly good a Winchester .375 H&H 25”  barrel, this “Weatherby” became a perfect candidate for a total redo. And being fortunate to live near Roger Ferrell, Master gunmaker and member of the ACGG, Fayetteville GA, together we designed this rifle: my “Lion Rifle” in 375 H&H Mag.

Furnished with a Letter of Provenance from the author.
