Description:
Serial number 25827. Original 30” full octagon barrel with a full length magazine tube. Beaches combination folding globe front sight. Early first model rear sight as well as a folding tang sight with a 4” staff. This gun was manufactured and shipped with another identical featured 30” only 2 numbers apart. That gun is serial number 25829 and is featured in “The Story of the Winchester 1 of 1000 and 1 of 100 Rifles” by Edmund E Lewis. An excellent book with a lot of research and interesting facts. This was 1 of 11 One of One Thousands that were manufactured with a 30” bbl. There were about 136 total One of One Thousands with only 75-80 that are known survivors. This gun is all original complete with a Factory Letter stating all the features such as rifle, 30” oct bbl, set trigger, checkered stock, case hardened, 1 of 1,000 and shipped from the warehouse March 7, 1877. Two guns to the order. Gun has all the right features for a 25k serial range such as coarse early first model style checkering and the more desirable elaborate One of One Thousand marking on the bbl with a platinum line at the breech as well at the end of the bbl. Elaborate scroll engraving also at the end of the bbl. Straight stock with excellent condition wood. There is some wear to the checkering. No splits or cracks. Rifle style buttplate. A VG bore that would benefit from a good cleaning. Correct first model thumbprint style dust cover. Nice crisp action. All metal is a plum/brown patina with generally sharp corners and good markings. No signs of abuse. Very light cleaning areas on the receiver. Original set trigger functions fine. On the right hand side of the stock is a silver placque that was put on for presentation purposes probably when it was new. It has scroll engraving surrounding an oval motif for an inscription which is unsigned. Very nicely done with a deep lovely patina. Good clean crisp sharp gun! The One of One Thousand is the most desirable gun for any Winchester collector to place in a collection and the hardest to come by. A truly sought after scarce gun. Comes with the original “Wanted Poster” that measures 14” by 17” from when they were trying to locate the One of One Thousands after the movie “Winchester ‘73” came out. A search for the rare guns was done by Steve Hannagan and he chased down about 25 of the 1 of 1,000’s. Also accompanying this gun are two color posters advertising the movie which starred Jimmy Stewart and Shelly Winters. Posters have bright color and sharp corners. All this together would make a fantastic exhibit!! This is a near impossible to find very desirable gun!
