Description:
Serial #587206, .38 Special, 2? barrel with an excellent, bright bore. This is an exquisite revolver that has full coverage scrollwork engraving on the barrel, frame, and cylinder that transitions into a large bas-relief eagle with raised wings perched atop the U.S. shield. This vignette takes up most of the right side of the frame behind the recoil shield and is signed by A.A. White just beneath the point of the shield. The hammer and trigger retain their original color case-hardened finish. The ivory grips are original to the Alvin White commission and have excellent age toning with distinctive hairline age cracks at the butt, however they were originally smooth with Mr. Stika's initials (?DWS?) on one of the panels. The later owner had the initials removed and the grips checkered instead. The revolver comes with the original two-piece blue Bangor Punta era box (with the A.A. White shipping label still affixed to the cover), S&W wax paper wrap, Model 49 instruction sheet, and a folder of documents pertaining to the engraving. The folder contains: Mr. Stika's original 1968 revolver purchase receipt from Midwest Sporting Goods Co. of Lyons, IL; Mr. Stika's collection record card for the revolver; the 1976 dated A.A. White letter sent with the revolver upon completion of the engraving; A.A. White brochure and price list; and a copy of an e-mail from S&W historian Roy Jinks regarding the revolver. Donald W. Stika was a well known and respected Chicago area dealer and was connected to A. Marcus Chernoff (A.M. Chernoff Ltd. is addressed as the agent in the A.A. White letter). This is a fantastic opportunity to own a fabulous and beautiful A.A. White engraved revolver with a spectacular patriotic motif. It would make a great piece for display and is a wonderful example of Alvin White's mastery. FFL
