Description:
A good flattened powder horn engraved MATTHEW MARVIN, LYNE, CONN, meant to be Lyme, the base is a wooden, and looks like a a burl elm. Cow horns were flattened by steaming them and then placing them in a form and having a weight on top of them. when they dry out they remain flat. This tradition was seen quite often more in Scotland then it came to this country. Overall the total curved length is about 9 3/4" and the elongated oval base is about 1 13/16" wide X 2 3/4" long. Photos don't pick-up the engraving that well. most of the time these horns were later covered in bowling alley wax to preserve them from drying out and cracking and making them weather proof to rain and snow when hunting!
