Description:
The pata or patta is an Indian sword with a gauntlet integrated as a handguard. Often referred to in its native Marathi as a dandpatta, it is commonly called a gauntlet-sword in English. These were used in battle to run at an opponent and use all your strength to pierce his chest plate armor or chain link armor.The gauntlet over the complete had protected the hand against knife or sword blows.The knuckle area has one small hole. These early weapons are not usually found in the West, and this one came from a Maharaja Fortress in old India a very long time ago. There is surface corrosion and rust but that would clean up .I prefer to leave items as I find them. the overall length is about 31 5/8", with a 20" blade. This item had seen much use with the wear evident a and nicks on the blade, and possibly had repairs over the years to keep it active and in use.
