Description:
Merwin & Hulbert Large frame single action revolver, 44-40 caliber, Manufactured from 1876-1880. Total quantity estimated at a few thousand.  This is a very early gun having a serial number of 1656. The Barrel has been cut to 4.5” and the bore is clean with light pitting, Pearl Grips and Engraved with Mexican Motifs. Mexican Eagle with Snake on one side and a Rooster and Hen on the other. The condition of the pistol is good but is missing a few parts, The trigger guard & swivel. The bore is fair and there is about 50% of the nickel left on the gun.
Along with this pistol is a Near identical, Spanish copy by  Nit & Char Manufactures of Firearms, which is the marking of Basque (Euskaro) firm of Spain. This pistol is in good condition with about 60% of the nickel remaining. The loading gate is missing.  The barrel has been cut to 5.25” and the bore is bright and clean. The birds head grips are constructed of horn.
Merwin, Hulbert, and Co. or Merwin Hulbert was an American firearms designer and marketer based in New York City which produced revolvers and rifles from 1876 through 1911. The firearms were manufactured by a subsidiary company, Hopkins & Allen of Norwich, Connecticut
