Description:
#10501, Westley Richards, 170. New Bond St. London: A Very Nice 12 Bore Centerfire Hammer Top Lever Sliding Single Bite Snap Action Bar-In-Wood Double Game Gun that remains in very nice condition that was sold by Westley Richards in 1864, Modern 1976 Birmingham Black Powder proof at 3 Drams with 1 1/8 ounce of shot, 30" Damascus barrels with rib extension dolls head with top bite at .730 .000 & .000", 2 1/2" chambers, Wall thickness on the right barrel at .033" & .035" on the left, Splinter forend with a wedge fastener, Carved horn forend tip, Straight hand stock at 14 1/16 x 1 9/16 x 2 1/4" over a steel buttplate, 7 lbs. 2 oz., 45% engraving coverage of nice period broad scroll engraving, The damascus barrels now retain 97% brown; No case colors remain on the locks, hammers and receiver breech, The buttstock & forend wood is very solid in every respect with a lot of shooting life left, The checkering is still 95%, Deluxe wood with superb color and contrast with deep black & brown color, The bores are excellent plus and totally free of any pits or blemishes, It is smack on the face with a lot of bite left; The gun was originally proved with .710" bores and then obviously honed to .730" and they remain exactly correct with the modern Birmingham BP proof at 3 drams and marked at the proof house with .729" bores, That is the reason they are bright & shiny and in excellent condition inside & out. Both locks are stamped inside "T.B." which surely is Thomas Bissell of 75 Tooley Street in London (Rigby Rising-Bite fame), the locks have all the trappings and appearances of a Bissell lock of that era. The locks remain in excellent condition and the internal stock inletting is very stout. This gun has the 170 New Bond Street address and Westley established this retail outlet there in 1815 under the management of William Bishop, The Bishop of Bond Street. Here is a system that was on the cutting edge of its time relative the Lefaucheux style of the drop-down action and it is still used to this very day. This is a solid gun that reeks of a Century and a half of history. This is an extremely nice double smoothbore for the shooter that has the spirit to shoot a classic piece. This gun can be shot safely with the proper loads. Always maintain a balance of nature, use a beautiful gun when shooting a beautiful bird.
