Description:
J.D. Dougall was a Scottish gunmaker located in Glasgow. This firm was in operation from 1816 to 1895. This revolver is a Pryse pattern similar to the Webley #4. This piece is serial #2126 on both the frame and cylinder. This excellent example shows 95% plus bright original blue with most loss on the cylinder which shows some minor pitting in the front. The forcing cone also shows some finish loss. The catch levers, hammer, cylinder knob, spring and screws all show bright heat blue. The barrel frame and cylinder show an excellent overall finish. The grips show all of the original checkering and finish. The barrel rib shows the name J.D. Dougall 59 St. James St., London. This was the location of their branch in London from 1864 to 1882. This revolver rides in its original oak case. The case shows correct and original label and lining. The label reflects both the Glasgow and London Addresses. It also reflects the Royal warrant from the Prince of Wales and The Duke of Edinburgh. The interior was designed to take 2 cartridge boxes, oil bottle and tools. This piece retains one of the original tin Eley's .380 cal boxes with an excellent label. Also present is an original brass cleaning rod and jag. The case itself is quite sound with some separating of the dovetails in the back which cold be easily glued and with the typical slight warp in the cover. Based on our examination of this revolver, it would appear that this piece was probably built and finished by the Dougall firm. The serial numbers appear to fall in line with the Dougall production - see page 113 "Boothroyd's Revised Directory". The component part may have been purchased in Belgium with the building, stocking and finish by Dougall. The .380 short cartridge, 124 GR bullet and 10 GR black powder was introduced about 1870. This piece is an excellent plus example of an English revolver built and retailed by a well established Scottish maker. An excellent example for the English revolver, Scottish or Webley collector.
