Springfield Model 1903 Pre WWI .30-06 Govt. This early gun appears to be all original. The action has been varnished, an old time way to prevent rust. The toe of the stock is below the butt plate which could be from sanding but does not appear to be as the cartouches are intact. It could be shrinkage, a common problem here in the desert southwest. The bore is medium dark from micro pitting, but with stong rifling. It appears to have "left service" no later than immediately after WWI as it has not been through arsenal refinish. The stock does not appear to have been in the trenches, as it shows mostly rack wear. The sling appears to be original, although we have not disassembled it looking for dates. This is an early rifle which has NOT been reheat treated and we recommend that it not be fired.
