Description:
SOLD..A decent Antique 1873 Winchester. In the very desirable 44-40 caliber. Has the standard 24" round barrel. S/N 113811 so it is a very early 3rd model. This gun also retains some of the 2nd model features including no caliber markings on the barrel or the brass carrier. These features are absolutely correct for this S/N range. The bore is very fine with nice strong rifling and no major pitting, rings or bulges. Just has some very light roughness from shooting black powder but no craters or breaks in the rifling. Very fine bore here and I am sure with some shooting and scrubbing it will clean up even better. Mechanics are excellent.. Strong springs throughout with no dropping lever. Hammer notches are excellent and hold on half and full cock with no problems.. It shoots great and is still accurate. It feeds, fires and ejects with no problems. No backed out primers or bulged cases. The metal is an over all smooth medium dark brown patina that has never been cleaned on or messed with. Traces of blue on the bottom tang in the protected areas and a little case coloring on the lever where it has been protected also. No pitting on the gun anywhere. One burred up lever spring screw on the bottom of the receiver {see photo} and one burred up upper tang filler screw {see photo}. In no way do either effect the functioning of the gun at all. Barrel address is a little weak in some places from honest wear but all is readable. Upper tang markings are excellent as is the S/N on the lower tang. The rear sight is a newer replacement and the front sight is a period replacement with a brass blade. The forearm does have a small sliver out at the top on the left side behind the forearm cap. It measures about 1" long and 3/16" deep and you can see in the photo. Another much smaller sliver on the right side same location. It measures 3/4" long and 1/16" deep. Has a grain split on the bottom of forearm but it is solid with no signs of any repairing. The forearm is solid and stable all around. The butt stock is very good  with no splits or cracks and no repairs. Never sanded or cleaned on. It fits perfectly tight to the metal all around with no gaps. Still sits proud to the metal on the bottom tang and the receiver. All in all not a bad ole 73. Still has a very nice bore, smooth metal and is in the very desirable caliber. I have this one priced very reasonable as it does have a couple warts but still way better than most you will find in this price range that works and functions like it should and not needing any costly parts or repairs. $50 insured shipping.
