Description:
GEORGE III FLINTLOCK DUELING PISTOL BY JOHN GARDINER OF NEWCASTLE, NORTHUMBRIA CIRCA 1790’S. .60 caliber smoothbore 8 ¼” octagon barrel with pre 1800 London proofs at the left breech and made without front sight. Engraved steel mounts and trigger guard with very fine “PINEAPPLE” finial. Walnut stock with classic Wogdon “dueller” style butt with flattened grip panels. Lock plate engraved “GARDINER” in script and barrel engraved “NEWCASTLE”. Classic form of dueller with plain blued steel mounts and no butt cap or side plate to reflect light. All original and complete except the hammer screw which is a period replacement that looks good. Fine condition with the lock in perfect working order and a nice bore. Excellent metal with crisp engravings and original unpolished patina. Stock with small hairline on the underside of the forend near the finial and a very small sliver missing along the right front barrel channel but is excellent otherwise with all the original finish. John Gardiner was a well known Northumbrian maker with a shop at Newcastle upon Tyne for 20 plus years.
