PORTER’S FIRST MODEL PERCUSSION TURRET RIFLE CIRCA 1851. Scarce large bore .52 caliber multi groove rifled octagon barrel signed on the right top flat “ADDRESS/P.W. PORTER/NEW-YORK” and “P.W. PORTER’S/PATENT/1851”. These are usually seen in .44 caliber and this may have been intended as a Military trials rifle. 100% original and in the best condition we have seen for one of these rifles. Serial number in the 1xx range and all matching except the cylinder which is close in number an extra for this rifle. Still has the original “U” shaped turret cover which is often missing. Perfect working order with excellent bore and crisp rifling. Barrel with 70-80% original blue and frame and action turned a grey mixed with bluish case hardening. Walnut stock with nearly all the original varnish and only a few minor nicks. We have only seen handful of these over the years and suspect that the survival rate of the original 300 is low. It is known Porter solicited a U.S. Government contract and was given a field trial in February 1853 at the Washington, D.C. Arsenal. Great defect was the rear chambers pointed toward the shooter’s head and multiple discharges were not uncommon in early percussion revolving firearms. Rarely seen for sale and in excellent condition as well. SOLD Antique: Yes |
