SPENCER MODEL 1865 CARBINE 50 CALIBER
           
 
14-173 Spencer Model 1865 Carbine 50 Caliber. In 1867 the government had many of these carbines restocked and refinished at the factory to government specifications. Standard Markings on top of the receiver: Spencer Repeating Rifle Company/Pat March, 1860 Oct./5/1852 metal markings are faint distinguishable after factory refinish (many others were obliterated during factory refinishing, but not this one). Walnut stock with light varnish finish (See Flayderman page 633) Serial number 10990.
 
Post War Alteration for Above. Altered by Springfield Armory c.1867-1874. 50 caliber rimfire (56-52 and 56-50 interchangeable). 22” barrel sleeved for smaller caliber; three grooved rifling. These arms are often arsenal refinished and restocked; markings will often appear weak or thin a small swivel device known as the “Stabler cut-off “ added forward of the trigger to allow for use as a single shot was added (keeps breech from opening completely.) Over 11,000 a altered.
 
Condition: Barrel and Frame are clean, Finish has turned brown with a little corrosion. Wood is very good condition with some dings, dents, hairline cracks, and a few chips .Bore is good/very good 50% rifling and some corrosion., which is typical  in a carbine of this era. Works perfectly mechanically. Overall a very attractive, very good condition Spencer. (14-173)
