Description:
Serial #2503, .303 British, 30 1/4? barrel with an excellent, bright bore. This is a simply splendid looking, LSA made rifle that has retained 92-95% of the original bright commercial blue that has faded slightly at the muzzle as well as along some of the exposed edges and projections. The cocking-piece and magazine cut-off retain a commensurate amount of black Suncorite that has flaked along the edges as well. The rifle was never equipped with a safety which is correct for these Lee-Speed style long rifles, and relies on the half-cock notch for that purpose. Other than the lack of safety, the rifle is fully equipped with bayonet lug and complete volley sights. The English walnut buttstock, forend, and handguard have an attractive straight-grained appearance, with small handling marks and minor surface blemishes scattered about the original commercial finish which still remains on the rifle. Despite their obsolescence in government service, Metford rifled commercial rifles were made well into the first decade of the 20th century due to their popularity with competition and target shooters, and examples nearly identical to this one can be found in post 1900 B.S.A. catalogs. This example of a very rare Metford rifled, commercial Long Lee is in excellent overall condition and would make a splendid addition to any collection of high condition British rifles (either military or sporting).
