Description:
REMINGTON ARMORY U.S. 1917 OR RUSSIAN CONTRACT 1891 MOSIN NAGANT MILITARY RIFLE. Serial number "593XXX". WW2 bring back out of the Phillipines. Received rifle right from daughter of GI who brought it back with a few other items. Kind of fun considering the story of these batches of Mosin Nagants not sent to Russian but bought by the US Govt. to keep Remington infollowing Russia's inablility to pay for the next shipment. Subsequently they were then bartered to the Siberian forces that be and then looted by the Japanese in about 1922. After which they showed up here and there as training rifles in various schools, etc. for training and homeland defense in Japan. Great article on Japanese Capture Mosin's in "Man-at-Arms" magazine(Oct. 2014 issue for gun collectors). Nice chunk of history for those who know the Siberian Expedition stories of US troops prior to WW2. Sold a few other pieces over the years but primarily carry guns of those GI's who returned. As far as the rifle itself, it has all of it's original parts save the front and rear grommets for the sling. Made of steel so possibly the Japs took all they could for scrap that was not essential to the rifle. Missing cleaning rod but otherwise all complete. All original factory blue with some areas of light rust without the pitting or salt and peppering except the buttplate which does hv some pitting. Wood overall is original with original stock finish and no cleaned areas. Bore is fair but should clean to excellent. Original sights. Great example with interesting story. You usually never see these rifles with provenance linking to a trip home coming the other way (Pacific Theatre).
