Description:
SOLD....Antique 1873 Winchester. Octagon barrel. 38-40 caliber. With a working set trigger. Here is a very nice and untouched 1873 Winchester. Has the standard 24" octagon barrel. It is in the excellent shooting 38-40 caliber. I personal prefer the 38-40 over the 44-40 because it is much more accurate and shoots flatter. Also has a special order single set trigger that works perfectly. Most set triggers you find do not work but this one works. It is fully adjustable. S/N is 166217 and was made in 1884 so it is a fairly early third model. Lots of history in this one. The bore is very good with strong rifling and shows some light roughness from honest use with black powder. No big craters, no rings or bulges. It shoots great and is very accurate and with the working set trigger is even more accurate. It is a blast to shoot. It feeds, fires and ejects perfectly and no bulged cases or back out primers. I cleaned and lubed the internals and this gun is ready to go shooting.!! Strong carrier and lever springs and has a very snappy action just the way they should be. The over all condition of the metal is a very pleasing dark plum brown patina. Has never been cleaned on or messed with and just the way I love to find these. Getting harder to find guns this old that have never been messed with or cleaned on over the years like so many have been. The metal is smooth with no pitting anywhere. Does show a few small specks of light surface crud here and there but nothing bad at all or detracting and should just be left alone. Markings are all good and readable but the gun does have the heavy dark patina {see photos}.. The gun still retains the original front and rear sights. Original dust cover that is still tight and retracts with the lever throw. The wood is very nice as well. Forearm shows just a bit of wear right in front of the receiver from riding many miles over a saddle pommel and from honest use. Fits tight with no slivers or missing wood. The butt stock is very nice as well and fits tight to the metal all around with no gaps. No splits or cracks and never sanded on or messed with. Very nice wood and better than most you will find on these early guns. This is a very nice and crisp 1873 that is fresh out of the wood work and has never been messed with in any way. It is in a great shooting caliber and with a working set trigger and no detracting issues. Getting very hard to find with out breaking the bank. $50 insured shipping.
