It is in extremely nice condition “no sheath”. The blade and brass hilt retain a beautiful unpolished patina, from 172 years of life. It came out of a home on the Eastern Shore of Mobile Bay, Alabama where it has resided since 1865. The markings are light under the patina, but readable. The hilt Eagle is nice and sharp on both sides. The blade is still very sharp and should be handled cautiously. The 1842 date is the date of the first government contract for this sword and 2,500 were delivered that year. The total production through 1846 was 6,600.
