Description:
NSN, .577 Snider, 19 1/4” barrel with a very good bore that has even light freckling along its length. This is an 1870 dated carbine with extensive War Department markings throughout and “(crown)/VR” cypher on the lockplate. The barrel and receiver have an overall dark plum-brown patina with scattered areas of mild freckling and gray fading at the muzzle and other projecting edges and surfaces. Some spots of original blue remain on the breech-end of the barrel and on the breechblock, which has some further small touches of blue remaining on top. Numerous small peen marks and light surface blemishes are present on and around the breechblock and the lockplate and hammer have acquired a lighter gray patina with mottled dark freckling over time. The brass trigger guard and buttplate have an overall mild yellow-ochre patina with dark brown mottled spots scattered throughout and there is an iron sling ring on the end of the bottom tang. The walnut stock has a thick added oil finish over numerous handling marks and surface blemishes throughout and there are some small chips missing from the left side of the forearm nose. The carbine comes with a dried and scuffed, but still intact, leather rear sight cover. This is a good looking Snider carbine overall in very good overall condition and would make a nice addition to a collection. Antique
