This is one of the Springfield armory alterations of a carbine to infantry rifle. This was done in or about 1871. The armory added new 32-1/2" round 50 cal bbl with 3-groove rifling. Also the stabler cut off. These had 2 bbl bands and an iron ram rod with ribbed head. This is a rare gun. There were only about 1,100 of these that were altered in this way. The stock does have the E S A inspector markings. It is very faint. Metal is in nice condition having turned antique grey color. Bbl is blue/brown. Wood is VG. Nice fitting on both stock and front wood. Mag tube is present and seems to be in good working order. Ram rod also present. The Spencer rifle was a great leap in the firearm evolution. This is a very nice example. Leroy Merz Antique Firearms specializes in antique and vintage Winchesters and other fine American firearms.
