Clawson Collection Records). The pistol, serial numbered (1279XXX), was first time issued to Lt. William Gerard Winters (MD)*, of New Rochelle NY, upon his entering US Naval service after graduation from Cornell University Medical School, Utica, New York, in 1959. Bill was a personal friend since high school (Iona Preparatory, New Rochelle, NY ‘51) and thereafter until his death in 2011. Bill gave the pistol to me in 1976 during the New York Great Ships Festival celebrating our nation’s 200th anniversary. He told me he discovered it recently when going through his Navy footlocker, stored in the attic since separation from service, and commented: “my Orderly must have put it there”. The gift included the two magazines with the pistol. He told me he shot it a few times from the ship’s fantail during practice firing at sea. I fired fifty rounds through it then put it in my safe until now. As stated, the gun’s condition throughout is original, near new condition shown by all components down to the magazines. Any finish wear is from storage, handling, cleaning and holstering; no rust or pitting. The frame’s left side has the proof mark “P” at the magazine release, and Arsenal inspector’s mark “FJA” (Col. Frank J. Atwood, US Army) below slide release. The Ordinance “Flaming Bomb” shows in the barrel channel. The frame’s right side at the rear shows the Ordinance “Wheel with Crossed Cannons”. To the middle is stamped “United States Property” (over) serial number, and to the right, “M 1911 A1 United States Army”. The grips bear inside markings of “K in a Star” on both; left slab shows raised number “1”, the right slab number “3” The Slide bears a “P” proof-mark at rear top, aligned to center, just forward from the rear sight (identical die mark to the frame strike). “Ithaca Gun Co., Inc. (over) Ithaca, N.Y.” is stamped on the left side. The Ordinance “Flaming Bomb” stamp, at the firing pin port in front of the firing pin retainer, is a partial strike. The barrel has undisturbed, shiny rifling, with the letters “HS” stamped on right side of lug. The magazines bear correct manufacturer markings; one is stamped “S” and the other “L”. An Ithaca 1911 A1 Navy Contract Pistol, in original condition is rare, even rarer with its personal history that preserves this gun in its accurate historic niche, giving it higher value to the Collector.
