#13785, Watson Bros., 7 Bury Street St. James's, London: Watson 475 #2 Nitro Express Made in the Golden Era after 1935 when the firm was bought by Grant & Lang as their works were at 7 Bury St., 25" Ejector Chopper Lump barrels with a Dolls head extension plus a Third Bite, 1/4 rib with 1 standing & 2 folding, Ivory bead front sight, Birmingham proved at 85 cordite with a 480 grain bullet, Bushed strikers, Double triggers, Extended trigger guard tang to the steel grip cap, Shadowline cheekpiece, Sling eyes, 15" LOP over the original 7/8" Silvers pad, (The spare stock is 14 3/8" over a 1" leather pad), The proper and correct 475 #2 weight of 10 lbs. 13 oz., 90% coverage of broad scroll engraving, Nice wood that remains very solid and stout with a lifetime of use left in both the butt and forend, I feel this gun is totally original, The barrel blue at 94%, 15% original case colors, Original wood finish at 90%, The checkering at 97%, 95% heat blue on the striker bushings, The great news is the bores as they remain virtually as new, It is smack on the face of the breech. This 475 #2 shoots the .483 diameter bullets and does very well with 83 grains of IMR 3031, Woodleigh 480's, Fed. 215 and 3 grains of poly fill. This piece is African proven. Not many double rifles were built in the late 1930's but most that were remain in much better condition today as WWII disrupted their intended use. A very solid double rifle that has nearly all of its mechanical life left in it. This Rifle is accurate and will do the job one expects. I sold this gun 10 years ago to a gentleman that thought enough of this gun that he had it restocked fore and aft as the 15" lop was to long for him. He did not want to cut the original stock or alter it in any way. This is flat out one nice British boxlock that is still in excellent original condition. ////////////////////////// The firm Watson came to be by Thomas W. Watson in 1875 when he bought Durs Egg and it became Watson Bros. in 1885; from 1896 to 1930 the firm was at 29 Old Bond St. and became a part of Grant & Lang in 1935. At one time they held an appointment to H.I.M. the Sultan of Turkey and The Shah of Persia. In 1989 a former Purdey craftsman, Michael Louca, bought the name and to this day is producing top drawer round body side by side's, several styles of a classic over & under's, 4 & 8 bore guns with barrels from 36" to 42" all with the Watson Bros. name.
