This Spencer .52 caliber carbine is 100% in its original Civil War configuration. This carbine is a fine example of the 1st Model Spencer seven-shot carbine without any of the modifications that were added later in the war. The US government contracted for a total of over 95,000 Spencer carbines during the war with 65,000 made at Spencer’s Boston, MA factory and 30,000 of the weapons made at the Burnside Rifle Company in Rhode Island. This Fine carbine is serial #57932. Has an 22" barrel with six grooves. The bore is excellent with crisp lands and grooves. The barrel has about 75-80% thinning blue left. There are scattered Inspector marks on the metal parts along with the Number 19 stamped on the loading block and loading tube and other major components. I believe this may be issue numbers for a State Cavalry Unit. Traces of case color on the receiver remain. The beautiful walnut stock and forend are excellent and have not been refinished. There is no stock cartouche nor was there ever one. The stock shows virtually no wear, just some handling marks. One small sliver on the forend has been repaired. The metal is a tight smooth fit wear it meets the wood, no gaps. Sling ring bar on the left side has never been off. The original steel loading tube is in excellent undented condition. Spring is strong and fits tightly in the shoulder stock. Top flat on the receiver, forward of the hammer, is stamped with “SPENCER REPEATING / RIFLE CO. BOSTON MASS / PAT’S MARCH 6, 1860” in three lines. All stampings are very thin; top line markings is all but invisible. Carbine has crisp, strong mechanics. Cavalry regiments who were issued the M1860 Spencer carbine were: 1st Connecticut Cavalry, 1st, 2nd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th Michigan Cavalry, 4th US Cavalry, 5th New York Cavalry, 1st New York Veteran Cavalry, 2nd Wisconsin cavalry, 8th Indiana Cavalry, and the 1st New Jersey Cavalry. The serial number on this falls into a range that the SNY purchased for their 1st Vet/Cavalry which might explain it's exceptional condition. I have lots of pic's but if I missed something just ask. Thanks for looking.
