Description:
This is a Fully Mounted Revolutionary War Gilpin Howitzer. This gun was manufactured by Cannon Limited of Coolville, Ohio in 1984. They had the contract for all of the Canadian National Park Service guns. This gun was ordered for the Oglethorpe's Highlanders. It is an iron tube with a steel liner. The tube was cast solid, then lathe bored and had the steel liner machined and permanently affixed inside the bored barrel. There are no welds to come loose, and the machine liner is made as an exact fit to the barrel. Cannon Limited agreed to custom create a Model 1760 Gilpin Howitzer with a 3 inch bore and a correctly chambered tube. The tube was cast with the cipher of George II of England. This is the only iron Gilpin that they cast and the serial number is 1!! The original R. Gilpin was casting howitzers circa 1758 for use in the colonies and on the continent. They could throw mortarballs approximately 400 yards, solid shot about 3/4 of a mile, and bagged grape up to 200 yards. This gun is light enough to be moved and crewed by as few as two men, but a crew of 4 is much better. Having a chamber to load makes it difficult to overload, but they do have a violent recoil. That is why they are mounted on a full-size field carriage. This carriage and gun can be easily disassembled and hauled in the back of an 1/2 ton pick up. US only - no International sales.
