Description:
#1970 S. North U.S. Model 1816 flintlock “horse pistol”, 9+” barrel, 54cal smoothbore and a crisp action. VG++ metal having some light freckle pitting in scattered amounts, most being on the barrel bands and left side serpentine plate, VG markings. Very good wood with very dim outline of a cartouche still visible and two small stress cracks, one on the belly and one behind the lockplate. Definitely an impressive large club-like early U.S. military handgun made between 1817-1820 with over 19000 produced. This was the first U.S handgun to exceed a production of over 6000 units. Collectors only need to look at the early “B” pirate movies made in the 1930s to 1950s to see these massive handguns being used in large amounts in what was then inexpensive “prop guns”. These very early American flints are still “sleepers” in the collecting world, because far later and far larger production handguns (Colt S/As as example) fetch FAR greater values and interest. This specimen is much better than average and an impressive original flint of the Andrew Jackson era. VG+ $1295
