Description:
#4917 Winchester 1886 OBFMCB 45/70 Gvt, 40XXX (1890), very good bore (7 on a scale of 10) and VG action. As can be seen in the photos, this gun has been totally semi-professionally refinished but while the black-blue is a fine job of the bluing process itself, the preparation was amateurish and shows scratches and file marks under the blue; it was not properly buffed and polished before being blued. The exterior is therefore just “VG” with the exception of the wood, which is near fine (as refinished). The forearm almost looks to be deluxe 2X wood, but unchecked, so likely just a good grade of standard wood. The butt stock is slightly lighter in color, but fits very well and is also original wood. The standard open rear sight is a mid-heigth buckhorn sporting sight and the front is the “pinched blade with ivory bead” Even though refinished, this is still a decent ’86 and WELL worth a small bit of effort to remove the blue, polish the metal, and give it a natural patina. It retains 100% bright blue-black overall, butt plate, frame, lever, etc, and no pitting. The caliber was one of the best heavy hitters of that era for most all hunting in North America, and still has good ballistics for heavy brush hunting for modern shooters. There are lots of pictures of this neat old gun, so if they all do not load up, be sure to e-mail me and I’ll forward them along to you. Certainly one of the few 1886s around that are original 45/70 with a decent bore that is still under $2500-$3000. About VG++ (as refinished) $2195
