Description:
#4929 Winchester 1873 OBFMSGB Second Model 38WCF, 88XXX range (1882 mfgr). Smooth tight action, VG-VG+ bore, being about a 7+ on a scale of 10 and not having any craters or deficits of mention, just some light lead build-up. Markings are mostly very good except the caliber markings on the elevator are very weak. The wood shows some wear, bumps, bruises, and some “chaffing” on the buttstock sides, and a sliver the forestock at the nosecap. The metal is a nice smooth dark plum brownish, dust cover is a dark bluish color and has obviously been replaced at some time in its long life (as has the rear buckhorn Kings Patent sight), but is the correct style for this gun. As a point of minor interest (but no great difference in value), this was originally intended to be a saddle ring carbine, but in the 70XXX-90XXX range, the factory ran out of rifle frames in the early 1880s, so they plugged the saddle stud holes with screws and shipped those guns out as rifles. Winchester also did the same thing with the brass framed ‘66s in the 152XXX-154XXX range. Overall, this is a very decent early 1880s Winchester and it has an overall handsome appearance. About VG as described. $1995
