Description:
This is a private label officer's “Robin Hood” service cap that has high quality butternut brown wool crown, side panels, and shaped peak. There is aluminum wire piping along the tops of the side panels and the peak top seam, as well as two pairs of brown enamel painted sheet ventilation grommets on either side. The visible portion of the dark brown felt crown band has an embroidered officer's RAD insignia. The stiffener within the peak is still intact and rigid. The interior of the cap has a wide and heavily worn pressed fiber comfort band which is embossed with the hat maker's trademark (this is repeated on a small circular cloth label on the interior of the crown and is for the Mayser company, founded in 1800). The cap is about size 56 or so and is in fine-near excellent condition. The Reichsarbeitsdienst (RAD) was the paramilitary labor service of the NSDAP and was used to instill military discipline in its members while also completing various public works and national construction projects. Once the war started, most of its members were absorbed by the Wehrmacht as soldiers or pioneers. This is a seldom seen piece of Third Reich headwear and is in excellent overall condition. It would be a great addition to any collection or historical display.
