Description:
Serial #246777, .45-70, 32 1/2? barrel with an excellent, bright bore. This is an 1877 dated rifle that has a predominantly freckled plum-brown patina on the barrel and receiver with some fading at the muzzle and on a few of the raised and exposed edges. The low-arch breechblock has a similar freckled pewter gray patina which carries over onto the lock and hammer (original color case-hardening is present on the underside of the breechblock). The ramrod, bands, and rear sight likewise have traces of their original blue finish with the balance of the metal having turned to a freckled plum-brown. The mechanism is tight and functions flawlessly. The walnut stock has not been sanded but does have an added military oil finish with a crisp, rarely seen, round ?ESA/1877? cartouche and minor handling marks and bruises scattered throughout the wood. Included with the rifle are an original leather musket sling that is crazed and flaked, but still intact and fully serviceable, as well as a Model 1873 socket bayonet. The bayonet has an old protective lacquer finish added over a dark plum-brown patina and comes with and original metal scabbard with brass ?US? roundel and flaked leather frog. This is a complete example of a U.S. Trapdoor rifle with a hard-to-find cartouche, and is in fine-near excellent condition. Antique
