Description:
SOLD.. Outstanding antique Smith & Wesson .38 caliber SA Second Model. Has the standard 3 1/4" barrel.. This is an outstanding VERY EARLY Smith & Wesson second model SA in .38 S&W black powder caliber. This is one of the best 2nd model Smiths I have ever offered for sale..  This is a VERY EARLY first year 1878 MFG 3 digit S/N 364 !!!! All matching of course.. This model directly followed the first model “Baby Russians “. This little jewel retains most all of it’s original nickel finish. The barrel has 98% finish remaining with just a couple very small spots missing on the breech end of the barrel by the cylinder from black powder flash.{see photo} The cylinder has 99% finish with just one or two pin head size flakes down in one flute.. Hardly even noticeable.!!!! The frame also has 99% finish including the front and rear grip straps with a couple of the same pin head size flakes. This gun has never been cleaned on or polished  and is just the way you want to find these 137 year old nickel plated revolvers. Hard to photograph these high condition nickel guns because of the glare but I think you get the picture of what this gun looks like and will look better in hand than in the photos. The mechanics are excellent. Absolutely crisp and tight as a new gun. Rock solid barrel to frame fit. The screws are all perfect and un touched. Perfect untouched front sight.. The barrel latch even retains 99% bright and deep blue !!! The trigger has about 80% blue that is just starting to fade a bit. Some bright case colors on the hammer sides also just starting to fade probably from being displayed in bright sun light.. Sun light kills case colors very quickly. It has not faded from wear, that is for sure. The grips are excellent with NO cracks or chips and still show their very fine checkering with very little wear. A perfectly tight factory fit. The markings are excellent.  The bore does show some minor roughness in a few spots from being fired with black powder and not cleaned right away but still shows strong rifling and would still be just as accurate as the day it was made. It may even clean up better as I have never made any attempt of cleaning anything on this gun. The chambers will clean to near excellent and I will try to give them a scrubbing before it sells. About all I can say on this one. Would be VERY HARD to improve on this one unless you found a 100% mint un fired gun. Good luck on that and you will probably pay double what I am asking for this one. Over all I would have to say this gun rates 98% to 99% excellent plus condition. Very hard to find 137 year old revolvers in this condition. I have had many in the 90% to 95% but only a couple with nearly all the finish. $18 insured shipping. Call 765-728-8049 or e-mail with any questions or more photos. You will not be disappointed with this one. Please check out my other listing by clicking on the link “view all Toms guns” as I may have something else of interest to you.
