Description:
S# NSN, .50 cal. percussion, 41 inch octagon swamped barrel, good smooth bore. This percussion rifle features a plain walnut stock with simple brass wedge escutcheons, brass tailpipe, ferrules, triggerguard, butplate, and patchbox cover. The trigger is also made of cast brass. Lock is marked "london Warranted" with engraved bird in rushes and simple decorative work above marking and on hammer. A small diamond shaped silver wrist escutcheon is present and stock has a cheekpiece with single shadow line and crisp bottom edge. Front sight is brass, rear slot is empty. Lock is held by a single screw in an oval sideplate. Patchbox has a thumbnail release and five piece hinge. It is quite similar in shape to the pair shown on page 31 of Chandlers Kentucky Rifle Patchboxes & Barrel Marks. The engraving is also quite simnilar. Both these guns are also full stocked in plain walnut and are marked S Allen on barrels. Silas Allen Jr was born in 1785 and worked in Shrewsbuty Mass from 1806-1845 making flint and percussion long guns. He died in 1850. Rifle remains in very good condition with a mottled dark developing patina on barrel. The drum, lock and barrel breech show typical pitting. Stock has a crack behind tang on right side and several small cracks along forend edges with a small piece missing on right 12 inches from muzzle. Brass parts wear a nice aged patina, lock and patchbox work well. An old rod with loom at tone end and reenforced tip at other is present, it is quite old and may be original. A very nice fullstock rifle for the collector. Antique
