Description:
Here is one of the nicest Trapdoors we have ever listed. Serial #406106, .45-70, 32 1/2” barrel with an excellent, bright bore. This is an 1888 dated rifle that has retained 95-97% of the original blue finish on the barrel, receiver, and lock with some very mild fading at the muzzle and on some of the raised and exposed edges. The low-arch breechblock has likewise retained nearly all of the original vivid color case-hardening with very little fading or wear. The ramrod, bands, and rear sight also retain their original blue finish with a few scattered tiny spots of plum-brown patina visible. The mechanism is tight and functions flawlessly. The walnut stock has not been sanded and has a crisp “SWP/1888” cartouche with minor handling marks and bruises scattered throughout the original military oil finish, mostly along the underside of the forend and belly of the buttstock. This is a wonderful example of a later production U.S. Trapdoor rifle with a hard-to-find level of original remaining on both the metal and wood. The rifle is in excellent overall condition and would make a stellar addition to any collection of American military rifles. Antique
