Description:
* * * SOLD ON HOLD PENDING FUNDS / U.S. Model 1911 Semi-Auto Pistol by Colt, serial # EXP.72645, cal. 45 ACP, comes with a 5” High Standard barrel with an excellent bore. This interesting pistol retains its Colt rough blue finish that has mellowed to a gray appearance except in protected areas. The heaviest loss is on the grip frame which is almost completely silver with the remainder of the metal surfaces a mottled mix of grays and silver. The pistol is equipped with diamond walnut grips with light handling marks. I believe that this pistol as marked was an experimental model but needs to be researched further. The Colt frame was made in 1918 and has an Eagle / S6 inspection stamp on the left frame, assembler number 34 on the left side of the trigger guard and the number 22 appears under the experimental serial number. The slide is 1913 manufactured and features the correct era sights. Interestingly the small “s” used by Springfield Armory appears under the firing pin stop on the slide and on the slide stop. The recoil spring guide is the early long sharp point variety. The serial number and the number 22 are hand stamped with the number 5 a different font size and the E is double struck. The bottom of the short beavertail hammer has been ground to a steeper angle and it could be theorized that it may have been an early experiment to reduce hammer bite. The flat mainspring housing is crudely hand stippled and a single magazine comes with this pistol. The overall condition as described is good - good plus. Inv.: # 1-1235
