Description:
NSN, .68 cal., 7 3/4" barrel with a very good, bright bore that has some spots of mild freckling about halfway down its length. This is an interesting pistol, identical in appearance to an 1822/42 percussion conversion but is virtually devoid of any markings save for a single small "S (in diamond)" stamp on the lockplate just behind the remnants of the ground iron pan, a small "GB (in oval)" on top of the breech next to the bolster, a small "PF" on the left side of the breech, and a "*/D" on the brass sideplate. There are no other markings nor does it appear that there ever were. The iron has an overall freckled gray-brown patina with some mild freckling and pinprick pitting, heaviest on and around the nipple bolster. The brass furniture likewise has a dull yellow-ochre patina while the walnut stock is in very good shape with only some minor handling marks spread throughout the original oil finish and a single with-the-grain crack at the rear of the lockplate. The lock itself is tight and fully functional however the ramrod is no longer present. This is a very nice example of an 1822/42 pistol with unusually sparse markings. {Ref.
