Description:
Serial #16, .31 Caliber, 4" barrel cluster with fine bores. This is an earlier gun made with the "quick-drop" grip profile and is equipped with a recoil shield. The barrel cluster has sharp edges with 30-40% of the original blue finish remaining, mostly on and along the raised ribs. The frame and etched metal nipple shield have some spots of brilliant original blue remaining with the balance of the metal having a mild plum-brown patina with specks of freckling and gray metal along the sides. There is some further bright original blue remaining on the exterior of the trigger guard bow and the bar hammer has fairly vivid original color case-hardening remaining. The walnut grips are in excellent condition as well with only some minor scratches and handling marks in the original varnish on either side. The mechanism is tight and functions flawlessly. The pistol is housed in a non-original (but period) two compartment case that has a dark brown velvet lining and a ruddy-brown colored varnished finish on the exterior. Included with the gun are a double-cavity brass mould that has slightly misshapen handles and a brass powder can with push-spout dispenser and ball/bullet compartment in the base. Both pieces have developed a mellow dark ochre patina on the brass with the can having a replaced faux-leather covering around the body. This is an absolutely beautiful example of an Allen & Thurber pepperbox that is in excellent condition and would make a stellar addition to any collection. Antique
