Very high serial number for a 1st Model (29XXX -1879 mfgr) and thus also having a genuine transition frame with both the 1st variation mortised thumb print dustcover and yet having the frame external pinned trigger like a 2nd variation!! It is no doubt due to changing over from one Model Variation to another in 1879 and both variations being made at the same time. The action excellent, the bore is very fine, being about an 8 on a scale of 10 with some light lead build-up, and very little wear to the rifling. Excellent smooth metal with 85% coverage of a 40% density plum blue-brown on the barrel 50% coverage of a 10% density on the frame, markings are Fine The wood shows very light wear and only light bumps, bruises. First Model 1873s are hard enough to find, but this one really has got to be an extreme rarity …probably less than a half-dozen ever made with these transitional features and a long barrel too! There are lots of pictures of this very rare and VERY handsome old Winchester (twenty in all), so if they all do not load up, be sure to e-mail me and I’ll forward them along to you.VG++ $4950 SOLD |
