Description:
NSN, .577 Snider, 36” barrel with an about good, lightly freckled bore. This rifle is a conversion of an 1861 dated percussion Enfield and has a “II*” marked breech block. Traces of the original browning remains on the barrel which otherwise has a dark pewter gray-brown patina on the balance with mild pinprick pitting at the muzzle, and a mottled gray, freckled patina on the “V.R.” cyphered lock and receiver. The brass trigger guard has a cleaned, pale yellow-ochre patina which repeats on the lock screw bolsters, nosecap, and buttplate. The walnut stock has a thick, added oil finish with numerous minor scattered handling marks and blemishes scattered about. The Enfield “1” cartouche is still fairly clear on the right side of the butt and there are a few minor marks along the belly of the stock and forend. An original metal ramrod with oxidized tip is included, as is a later period leather sling that is still serviceable, but has some heavy flaking at the upper swivel. The mechanism is fully functional, but the block is sticky, making extraction difficult. This is a very nice Snider in about good-very good condition overall. Antique
