We are offering an antique percussion rifle marked I(J) ADAMS  chambered in .71 caliber dating to the early 1800’s.There are a great number of J. Adams listed but it is probably either John Adams, Birmingham, 1822-31 or Joseph Adams, Birmingham, 1767-1813. This rifle was originally a flintlock and was converted to a percussion rifle later. Marked "I. Adams" underneath hammer.

41” barrel is in good condition and has normal patina expected from a firearm of this age. Bore is smooth and pitted; No heavy wear. Front bead sight. There are some markings on the breech of the barrel but I cannot tell what they are. The gun barrel English and the P in a circle is a Birmingham proof. The style of the furniture is New England and so perhaps the M is for Maryland. Decorative sideplate shows patina; surface wear. Left sideplate, decorative trigger guard, butt plate and ramrod parts are brass. Silver escutcheon and wire inlay on tang on stock. This was an officer’s fusil. Many infantry officers carried a musket when in the field, usually privately made, somewhat lighter than the standard military type and usually with this same type of silver embellishment. Furniture is very good with a repair where the percussion conversion occurred; crack starting on left side of breech. This rifle does not have the original ramrod but has a replacement with a brass tip. One of the brass ramrod guides is damaged. SCARCE RIFLE.
