Description:
Serial #5727, .455 Webley, 6 1/2ā€ barrel with an excellent, bright bore. This exquisite revolver was one of the 808 .44 Triple Locks converted to .455 at the factory and released for British Contract and commercial sale. These revolvers predate the .455 1st Model Hand Ejectors and are little known, even to some experienced collectors. The revolver has matching numbers on the frame, cylinder, yoke, extractor, and barrel with the metal retaining 97-98% of the original blued finish that has silvered lightly at the muzzle as well as along some of the projecting edges. There is a light turn-ring on the cylinder and some further trace silvering around the flutes. The trigger and hammer have about 80-85% of the original bright color case-hardening remaining with some speckled dull gray fading on the balance, and there is a very small and unobtrusive import stamp on the interior of the frame under the yoke. The checkered, diamond-center, S&W medallion grips are pencil numbered on the interior, and have only some scattered minor handling marks and small blemishes (mostly around the butt) and very little flattening of the points. The lock-up is rock solid and the mechanism functions flawlessly. Included with the revolver is an original brown leather private purchase officer's holster with nickel steel ā€œDā€ rings for attachment to a Sam Browne belt. The leather is in excellent condition with few scuffs and the brass closure stud has a mild yellow-ochre patina. A photocopy of a 2010 dated S&W factory letter is included which lists a ship date of January 1, 1912, to Cowdrey & Co. of New York City. It is interesting to note that the ledger still lists the revolver as a .44 caliber revolver. The British Government contracted for 660 revolvers (a list of those serial numbers is given in the Jinks and Neal book), but 148 were released for commercial sale, and this revolver is one of them. From its initial shipment to New York, the revolver eventually ended up in Ontario, Canada, presumably as a private purchase officer's sidearm. This is a simply stellar .455 Triple-Lock in excellent condition, and would make a handsome addition to any collection. {Ref: "Smith & Wesson 1857-1945" by Neal and Jinks; 1996} FFL or C&R
