Description:
This is a very fine example of the helmet and liner combination worn by US troops in the early campaigns of Guadalcanal and North Africa. The helmet is a fixed bale model with khaki straps in its original condition, showing just honest use. The liner is the final type Hawley being made with the khaki webbing adopted just prior to the change-over to plastic liners. The liner exhibits a major crack which originates near the fixed bale. This was a common problem and prompted the search for more durable liners. There is a second smaller crack as shown in the photos. Note also a few very minor drops of paint on the top. Despite these normal wear problems, this a very fine example of the early headgear which came to symbolize the American soldier in World War II.
