Description:
SOLD... Antique 1873 Winchester round barrel in 38-40 caliber. Here is a pretty decent entry grade shooter/collector at a reasonable price. Has the standard 24" round barrel. S/N 240869 and made in 1888. The bore is just about good. It does show some wear and some black powder roughness as is very common but has no rings or bulges. The rifling is visible all the way through. It is not pitted deep or craters and it still shoots straight. I have had worse bores than this in 38-40 caliber and they still shot just fine. I like the 38-40 over the 44-40 for just this reason. This caliber is just inherently accurate even with less than perfect bores. If you are a hand loader then the possibilities are endless to find a load this gun likes. Jacketed bullets offer even more accuracy with less then perfect bores also. The mechanics are excellent. It feeds, fires and ejects perfectly with no backed out primers or bulged cases. All the springs are tight and positive as are the hammer notches. The metal is an over all dark chocolate brown patina that has never been cleaned on or messed with. A previous owner has at one time lightly cleaned a little on the barrel address and the upper tang to make the markings stand out better as you can see in the photos. They did not clean the caliber markings on the barrel or the S/N on the lower tang as you can also see. The cleaning is very light and not aggressive or scratched into the metal with any thing abrasive as you can see. The caliber markings are worn off of the brass carrier and the barrel caliber marking is much better in hand than the photos show. It still has the original dust cover. It is loose as most you see and is best to retract it by hand so not to hang up on the bolt when it retracts. Just some very light roughness on the dust cover and a little on the top of the receiver from black powder flash.. The rest of the gun has no pitting and is smooth and never messed with. Has the original front and rear sights. Front sight has a silver blade style. The wood is average to good. The forearm is nice with no cracks or splits. The butt stock has been lightly cleaned at one time as it is lighter in color than the forearm but still fits very well to the metal. It has had a pretty good sized chunk that has been knocked off and repaired at the toe of the stock as you can see in the photos. It is the original piece of wood and has simply been glued back on. It is a solid and pretty good repair that would last with normal use for many years to come. Nothing fancy here but an honestly used ole 73 with a shootable bore that is priced about as cheap as you will find that does not need $300 to $400 worth of parts and repairs. As you know, all of my Winchesters are ready to shoot as I go through them and test fire every one of them before I list them for sale. Call 765-728-8049 with any questions or more photos. $50 shipping insured mail. I don’t think you will be disappointed in this one for the price.
