Winchester 1879 Match Grade Hammer Shotgun
  • 12 bore
  • 27" double fine laminated steel barrels
  • Rebounding hammers
  • Dolls head lock
  • All original very good condition
  • Bores are good
  • Checkering is worn but present
  • Various handling marks throughout (no visible splits or checks)
  • Barrel rib is a solid concave marked "Winchester Repeating Arms Co. "Match Gun" New Haven Conn. U.S.A."
  • Has engraved side lock action with 6 pins
  • Engraved hammers, breech, upper & lower tang, forend metal, bottom barrel lugs, and trigger guard
  • Completely engraved lower receiver
  • Blank brass engraving shield on upper wrist of stock
  • Checkered widows peak butt plate
  • Prince of Whales grip stock
  • Made between 1879-1884
  • Proof marks says "not for ball" "10b" "12M" on both barrels, "2238", inspector marks "G E.H.", "WB", "SW" (also has British proof marks)
  • Extractor gun
  • Most of these Winchester shotguns of various grades were purchased from English gun makers and were generally for sale in the Winchester store in NY City
  • The first guns were not Winchester marked but beginning in 1879 were listed with the address as on ours with the grade of the gun
  • Advertised and marked were match guns and class A, B, C, & D
  • Stocks were English walnut and generally very good quality
  • The highest grade offered was the Match Grade, lowest was a D
  • Total of approx. 10,000 made
  • Made in 10 & 12 GA, and barrels range up to 32"
  • Very scarce model to find
  • Match Grades were a 25% premium at time of purchase
