This beautiful custom sporter was built on a military 98 mauser action with a Johnson automatics barrel and double set triggers fitted to a carved and checkered stock with horn tip. A Zeiss Zelvier 4 power scope is fitted in a Griffen & Howe double lever windage adjustable quick release mount. A Lyman No. 48 second variation sight base with slide blank is also installed. Bolt and extractor are engine turned, bolt knob is checkered in a two panel pattern with ribbon. Action rings are stippled with light engraving on rail, bolt release, front sight ramp, trigger guard, floorplate, and pistol grip cap. The safety slide has a gold inlaid "S". Stock is carved with foliate designs behind checkering patterns, also an intricate design is carved behind cheekpiece. Stock is stamped on wrist with early Roy Vail stamp in block letters and has a Pachmayr Custom recoil pad with "Roy Vail Warwick, NY" in center. LOP measures 13 5/8 inches. Stock has a small gold escution with WS initials near toe. Vail used this square escution on many of his rifles. Rifle remains in excellent condition with 97% blue. Several screw slots show light damage. Wood shows very few light handling marks. A small chip is missing between peep sight base and bolt handle. Scope has bright clear optics and crisp reticle. Rifle comes with a military style leather sling in quick release swivels. This is a very high quality post war custom sporter by a highly respected New York Gunsmith.
