Description:
SOLD... Excellent 1st Model Smith & Wesson Baby Russian. Rare British Proof markings. Rare 4" barrel. Here is a fantastic 1st Model Smith & Wesson Baby Russian. Possibly un fired!!! Has the harder to find 4" barrel. Also has the very rare British proof markings on the barrel and cylinder. {see photo}.. There are two proof markings on the barrel with a crown over GP and a crown over a >. The cylinder has 5 proof markings. Three are crown over > and two are crown over GP.  S/N 8813 and ALL matching. Only 25,548 made of this model from 1876 to 1877. Caliber is the S&W .38 center fire..  The finish is outstanding. The barrel retains 99% original nickel finish. The cylinder has 90%+ finish. The frame has about 85% finish. Just missing some areas that the finish has flaked off and not worn. The worst being on the right side of the frame as you can hopefully see in the photo. Nothing bad at all or detracting. Just what happens to nickeled guns that have seen even very little use. The hammer still shows bright case colors. The barrel latch, trigger, extractor, extractor pawl, extractor rack catch all retain 100% bright blue. The markings are excellent. The mechanics are excellent. Crisp and tight as a new gun. Rock solid barrel to frame fit at the latch. The bore and chambers are absolutely mint!!! Bright and shiny like a new gun. This is what makes me think this gun could possibly be un fired. It shows a VERY light drag line on the cylinder that all of these S & W show even on minty guns that have been fired. This gun looks like it has been carried very little and not shot at all, just played with and cocked over the years. You will never find one with a better bore and chambers period !!!! The grips are mint. Still show all the very fine checkering and NO wear what so ever. A perfect factory fit. ALL the screws including the take down screw on the top of the barrel to remove the cylinder that will usually show some wear even on mint guns are ALL UN TOUCHED with perfectly sharp heads.!!! I do not think the cylinder has ever been removed for cleaning.. Another reason I think this gun could be un fired.. No dings around any of the take down pins. These early Baby Russians are very hard to find in this condition at this price. I have had these with a bit more nickel finish over all but not with 100% trim blue, bore and grip condition, etc. All these factors add up to one very nice Smith & Wesson. I have searched theand found some other well known dealers have this same condition gun priced at $1400 to $1500. This gun has a lot going for it. Condition, Rare British proof markings, rare 4" barrel, flat out mint bore and chambers, mint grips, mint mechanics. And while it is not priced cheap, I think it is still very reasonably priced. This yet another gun that I should be keeping for my self. But I can’t keep’em all !!!! Shop around and compare, then call me quick. $18 insured priority mail shipping.
