Description:
RARE AND FINE COLT U.S.N. NEW MODEL 1861 NAVY REVOLVER WITH FACTORY LETTER TO U.S. NAVY DEPT, WASHINGTON ARSENAL. .36 caliber with 7 ½” barrel having the one line “ADDRESS SAML. COLT NEW-YORK, U.S. AMERICA” barrel address. All matching in the 2,xxx serial range including the wedge and 100% original and in fine condition. Superior condition with 40% plus blue mixed with a beautiful deep patina. Excellent markings with crisp serial stamps and partial cylinder scene with even patina. As most often seen on these there are no Government inspector’s markings on these as they were shipped in lots to the Washington Arsenal for Ordnance Officer Lt. Col. George Ramsey to inspect on arrival- certainly for expediency sake early in the War. Interestingly the rush appears to have been to equip the ships the took part in the Galveston, Texas Raid of November 7, 1861. (see J.D. McAulay’s, CIVIL WAR SMALL ARMS OF THE U.S. NAVY AND MARINE CORPS, page 74.). Unpolished brass straps and excellent plus factory military grips with the original arsenal oil finish. Excellent working order and nice bore with good rifling and all good chambers. Colt Factory letter states that it was shipped from the factory on October 7, 1861 to the U. S. Navy Department, c/o Lt. Col. G. D. Ramsey, Washington Arsenal, Washington, D.C. as part of a 200 gun shipment. Interestingly the letter states it was shipped as “BLUE” and “BRASS” with the latter denoting a “martial” brush polish instead of the standard silver plated brass of the Civilian Model 1861’s. Scarce and very desirable U.S. Navy Civil War Colt Martial.
