Description:
Very rare Bronze Gun "C" Lyle gun used at Life Saving stations along the United States coast to fire a 17.5 pound projectile to ships wrecked off shore. Weight is about 180 pounds. All original except for replacement quoin (elevates back of cannon to change range) in very fine condition with rare original brass firing mechanism model 1936. Marked on the right trunnion U. S. L. S. S. The muzzle is marked with the serial number 1469  dated 1929 and initials for the Watervliet Arsonal where it was made. That is the oldest arsonal in the United States. Bore is clean and the carriage wood is solid and sound. Could be left with the original patina or brass and wood cleaned. The original design of the Bronze Gun "C" was in 1877 by Lt. David Lyle. This is the ultimate life saving gun and MUCH superior to the Galbraith model. I have a crate to ship. J P Barnett, owner of South Bend Replicas, wrote a book called The Lifesaving Guns of David Lyle and actually made a few Bronze Gun "C" replicas that are used in demonstation firings at a few Life Savving stations such as Chicomicomico on the Outer Banks of North Carolina.
