Description:
SOLD...Antique Colt 1860 Conversion. Here is a pretty nice Colt 1860 first model conversion. S/N 199125 and all matching. Caliber is the .44 Colt center fire. Has the standard original length 8" barrel. Never cut or re stored like many you will find. The finish could be a very old period of use nickel or factory nickeled at the time of the conversion. The reason I say this is that the barrel address is very weak and parts of it can only be seen with a jewelers loop. Colt did not re stamp any markings when converted so the address might have been weak from holster wear.. All other markings are very readable. The barrel has about 75% finish remaining. The cylinder has no finish and the frame has just a trace of finish. The back strap has about 80% and just traces on the trigger guard. The cylinder does show 50% cylinder sene but the other 50% is covered with pitting from being stored one side probably in a old holster that got wet. One area of pitting on the barrel over the address also. NO pitting on the frame. The mechanics are all excellent. Tight and crisp as a new gun. NO wobble on the arbor pin at all. Barrel is rock solid tight to the frame also even with the wedge removed. You have to tap the barrel from the frame with wooded dowel to remove it, it is still that tight. This gun is tight as the day it was made. Hammer notches are all perfect. The bore is very good. Strong rifling all the way through with just light roughness. It is a great shooter that has been in my collection for a while. I am just selling it as I have many more that are in better condition and I was keeping this one for my shooter. I just do not have time to play with these guns any more so they might as well be enjoyed by some one who has the time to play with them. The chambers are all excellent and smooth so the cases are easily extracted with no bulges or swells as many you will see. The original to the gun grips are pretty decent with a larger and very old chip on the right side front toe. It is smoothed over so it has been like this for decades. One very small chip on the left toe. Both can be seen in the photos. Could be easily repaired if desired and would helps the over all looks of the gun. The rest of the grips are in great shape and a perfect factory fit all around the frame and back strap and actually show traces of the original varnish in the upper area by the frame The ejector housing is original to the gun but the ejector rod and head only are reproduction. Very common for these to be broken or completely missing as is the case here. It functions perfectly and ejects the cases just fine. Excellent and un touched front and rear sights. Excellent and original rebounding firing pin. These large frame conversions are your true “cowboy” revolvers that were in use way before the Colt SAA was even invented. They are one of the very first cartridge firing revolvers of the day. Most of these conversions show VERY heavy use and abuse and many are found with the barrels cut off for easier concealment. Here is one that has survived after all these years and pretty much all original and shows use but NO abuse. It is still as tight and functions like it did when new. It is not a $8000 beauty queen that you would never want to take out shooting BUT it is not a $1500 wall hanger clunker either. It is a real shooter and I feel I have it priced very fairly compared to others I see for sale on thesights today. They are not cheap by any means and most are priced right up there with the Colt’s SAA in the same condition. They have been and still are very sought after by “old west” collectors around the world for good reason. Not many were ever produced and many do not even exist any more. The excellent book be the late Bruce McDowell is a must have for the conversion collector. Even the book is not cheap if you are lucky enough to find one. $30 insured shipping.
