Description:
NSN, .65 caliber, 5? octagon barrels with fine, bright, smoothbores that have some traces of very mild freckling along their length. These are simply beautiful pistols that retain 97-98% of their original bright, lustrous blue finish along the barrels which have some very minor silvering along the hard edges and at the muzzles. The silver frames likewise retains virtually all of their original finish and have elegant British scroll engraving with an overall still bright patina on both pistols. The belt hooks retain 80-85% of their original bright fire blue with some pale fading starting to occur near their bases. The blued and engraved hammers, trigger guards, and blued captive ramrods are also in excellent condition with very little finish loss, even on the more exposed portions. The checkered walnut grips are quite handsome hand have inlaid metal dot embellishments that were applied in a pointilist manner near the frames to form a rose and leaves motif on both sides of the grips and as geometric decorations within the checkering pattern as well. The pistols are housed in their original brass reinforced case that has a small circular brass presentation plaque on the lid that reads: ?Presented/by/RICHARD BURNAND/Gun Maker/to be shot for by the/VOLUNTEER RIFLE CORPS/OF/NEWCASTLE,/NORUMBERLAND/& DURHAM./1861?. Richard Burnand operated in Newcastle upon Tyne from 1843-1890, first at 111 Pilgrim St., then at 28 Pilgrim St. A small rectangular silver plaque beneath it reads: ?WON BY/JOHN PARKER/GUNNER 3RD DURHAM V. ARTILLERY/AT THE INAUGURATION OF THE/NEWCASTLE UPON TYNE/RIFLE GROUND/JUNE 28, 1861?. The case measures 14 1/4? x 7 3/4? x 2 1/1?, and has a seven compartment interior lined in excellent original dark blue baize with embossed black and gold maker label on the interior of the lid. The pistols come with a full complement of accessories including a pristine powder flask, wooden ramrod with cleaning jag, bullet mould, turn-screw, oil bottle, and a brass powder measure. This is an absolutely unparalleled pair of pistols that have an incredible amount of their original finish remaining, and have both presentation and recipient identification plaques. The photos really do not do this pair justice. The blue is so bright on the barrels you get a lot of reflection. They are gorgeous and would be very difficult to upgrade in any collection. Antique
